Permanent Resident (PR)
A permanent resident (PR) is a citizen of another country who has been given permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada under one of the above economic/non-economic programs. A permanent resident is not a Canadian citizen.
As a permanent resident, you have the right to:
- Receive social benefits that Canadian citizens receive, such as health care coverage
- Live, work or study anywhere in Canada
- Apply for Canadian citizenship after a specific period of residency
- Protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
A person in Canada who is in Canada temporarily, as a student, or a foreign worker or visitor is not a permanent resident.
As part of economic migration thousands of eligible workers are invited to apply for permanent residency in Canada every month through Express Entry, which includes the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Program.
